this area. they focused their attention at the 100-block of terry francois where officers say a construction worker found a box around 8:45 this morning and that area is just north of the ucsf mission bay campus. the box was found at a construction site, sfpd immediate will go responding and found what looks like an old military box. they didn't tell us the contents of the box. they just said it contains suspicious items. we saw a robot earlier and the bomb squad carefully examined the contents of the box. an officer says this was a time- consuming process. >> time is on our side. we want to make sure we take things slowly and mental cloudy as we deal with anything whether it be something dangerous or not. we want to make sure we err on the side of caution for public safety and officer safety, as well. >> reporter: the incident caused several street closures including the area south of china basin. they had to shut down 3rd

street between mission bay and mission rock, 4th between south bay and mission rock and other parts of the china basin. now they are trying to clear the area. officers told me the good news is no injuries were reported. and as michelle mentioned earlier, they did have to evacuate one building and that was a building on the 1200 block of 4th street. it was a mixed use building, both residential and commercial. but again, the "all clear" has call. the streets are open again in the area. back to you. >> thank you. artists are being questioned by police after a fire tore through a gallery in san francisco's mission district. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is on the scene. they may be held responsible for a work of art that was intentionally set ablaze. >> reporter: yeah. that is all being decided as far as will there be criminal charges. in the meantime they are still cleaning up at the gallery on mission street in san francisco after a work of artistic

express became a potential criminal investigation. -- after a work of artistic expression became a potential criminal investigation. this was supposed to be the piece celebrated in a gala reception tonight and instead caused a fire at the queens nail art gallery. >> it created a fire, surprisingly. >> reporter: this person works at a coffee shop across the street. >> they told us, you know, we're putting 15,000 matches in this part of the united states and they talk about how much work it was and ordering all these matches. >> reporter: and then at around 10 p.m., this map of the u.s. made of tens of thousands of matches was lit on fire on purpose. it got out of control causing about 5,000 dollars in damage. it's part of an exhibition called, they hate us for our freedom. here's another part of the demonstration. we found this video on youtube. here's the artist claire fontaine who didn't want to speak citing an arson investigation. neighbors weighed in.

the deadly terror attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. tara mergener is at the capital with details of this heated hearing. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton became emotional recalling the return of coffins of the bodies of ambassador chris stevens and three others to andrews air force base. >> i put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters and the wives left alone to raise their children. [ voice breaking ] >> reporter: clinton accepted full responsibility for the september terrorist attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi, libya that killed four people. she also responded to criticism that the obama administration misled the public about who carried out the attack. >> the fact is, we had four dead americans! >> i understand. >> was it because of a protest or because of guys out for a walk some night who decided they would go kill some americans? what difference at this point does it make?! >> reporter: but some lawmakers were not satisfied with

clinton's testimony. >> all these warnings, all these things -- we didn't have a single department of defense asset apparently available to come to the rescue. the american people and the families of these four brave americans still have not gotten the answers that they deserve. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton was supposed to be here on capitol hill last month but postponed her testimony after suffering a concussion and developing a blood clot near her brain. clinton testified that the fbi has some promising leads into who carried out the attack. >> what they are trying to determine is how best to respond. >> reporter: clinton told lawmakers she is determined to leave the state department and the country safer, stronger and more secure. tara mergener for cbs news, capitol hill. a deep freeze in the eastern part of the country is blamed for four deaths. more than a dozen states have winter weather advisories stretching from minnesota to even florida. and meteorologists say the bitter temperatures are

about to pay more the next time you mail. the u-s postal hope you stocked up on forever stamps because if you didn't, you're about to pay more the next time you mail out. the u.s. postal service is upping the cost of a stamp by a penny this weekend. now it will cost 46 cents to send a letter. 33 cents for a postcard and for the first time ever, the postal service is going to start offering a global forever stamp for $1.10. there is a truth in the battle over the debt limit. the house passed a bill that business the country another 4 months before default but the measure forces the senate to do something it hasn't done in four years. cbs news reporter randall pinkston explains how republican leaders in the house now have senate democrats cornered. >> the house will come to order. >> reporter: lawmakers in the house passed legislation allowing the government to continue to borrow money and pay its bills.

the senate is also expected to approve the measure that suspends the debt limit until may and prevents turmoil in the financial markets. >> we will not risk the full faith and credit of the united states. >> reporter: republicans came up with the plan reversing course from just a few weeks ago when they wanted to use the debt limit vote to force democrats to agree to more spending cuts. but this new measure does include a catch. it requires the democrat- controlled senate to pass a budget by april. if they don't, lawmakers' salaries will be frozen. >> it's simple. no budget, no pay. >> all we're saying is, congress, follow the law! do your work! >> reporter: getting a budget passed could be difficult. senate democrats haven't done it in nearly 4 years. senators from both parties say they are willing to work together. >> so do we have some kind of detente that may yield an agreement? >> we're done. we just worked it out. >> reporter: joking aside, many democrats are not happy with

the republican strategy. >> there's never been a catch on the debt ceiling. congress ran the bills up, congress has to pay th bills. that's been done with presidents of both parties. >> reporter: lawmakers argue that the temporary debt limit suspension only sets the stage for another spending fight this spring. randall pinkston, cbs news, capitol hill. >> and taking a live look at wall street, stocks are up. the dow is up about 78 points. strong earnings reports from google and ibm pushed stocks higher this morning. this afternoon, things are still going strong. the big easy is getting ready for the world stage having the 9ers and ravens playing in the super bowl is great for fans and for the new orleans economy. two weeks out jackson square is almost transformed. small businesses especially local breweries are getting ready for the influx of fans and media. the game is expected to bring

light rain in the evening commute forecast. pinpoint temperatures right now in the 50s with the cloud cover in concord, livermore light rain at 51. also in the low 50s in santa rosa. here's what you need to know about your forecast. first off, the rain will continue throughout the evening hours but it's very light in nature. the showers begin to taper off later on tonight but we are going to keep an unstable weather pattern in the offering through the weekend. right now jet stream is curving south of the bay area. area of low pressure is bringing precipitation as far south as los angeles. meanwhile we're anticipating maybe just a dusting of snow at best in the high sierra. cloud cover and some late rain late day in throughout the central valley. 56 degrees with the rain showers tapering off in eureka. futurecast watch the clock tick by. that's how you can plan your afternoon. right now, we're looking at hit and missing scattered showers under a mostly cloudy sky. the winds will be driving out of the south 10 to 20 miles per

hour. the bulk of the rainfall is north of the golden gate bridge before we see lesser amounts around the peninsula but nearly a half inch of rain anticipated in the hayward area through union city. here's your temperatures. 50s and low 60s. let's go ahead and play it out like this. rain tapers off leaving us us with partly cloudy skies thursday morning after a light rain shower. we'll have partial clearing on friday, as well. then over the weekend, this is really bearing to watch right now at this particular time because it looks like one computer model wants to bring the rain in hereby the other one is completely bullish on any kind of precipitation. so it's a wait-and-see time. >> you just wait five minutes and the weather changes. >> it depends from microclimate to microclimate. >> thank you, roberta. coming up next, why booze before bed is bad. plus, food fraud. how much of what you get at the grocery store may not be what you think it is.

researchers, it interferes with a good night's sleep. in today's health w booze before bed might help you fall asleep faster but according to researchers, it interferes with a good night's sleep. in today's healthwatch, the london sleep center says alcohol helps you get into a deep sleep for longer but it reduces rem sleep which leads to poor concentration and memory. and the fda is looking into

ways to make nutrition labels easier to understand. many food labels calculate calories per serving but there is usually more than one serving in the container. researchers say listing fat and calories per serving and per package would help consumers more accurately calculate healthy portions. if you think you know what's actually in the food you're buying at the grocery store, you could be wrong. experts at the national center for food protection says about 10% of the food on the shelves is mislabeled, diluted or misrepresented. some of the biggest culprits, fish products, fruit juices, olive oil and honey, expired infant formula and wine. >> i think that the question comes down to enforcement and clear standards and the u.s. right now has neither. >> in the end, there isn't any problem with food. if there's a problem it's the consumer who pays either a higher price or through

illness. >> reporter: researchers say food fraud costs the u.s. 10 to $15 billion a year. manufactures could be warned if the fda finds mislabeled or misrepresented products or the products can be moved to store shelves. there is nothing fake when tony tantillo is in the kitchen. today he and his daughter stephanie show us an easy dish from the streets of greece. >> today we're going to make a wonderful different that is so mediterranean. we are going to serve it over pita. the pepper is a cubinali pepper. >> all over the mediterranean, very mild and delicious. put the sausage in first, brown it and put everything else in there and we don't want to cook it for too long. >> just until everything is soft and fits into a sandwich. >> finish this off with parsley, red pepper, and regular pepper. >> beautiful. look at this.
